Crafted with performance.
When you build a home, you're not just choosing a floor plan and a finish — you're choosing how that home will feel to live in, how much it'll cost to run, and how well it'll hold up for decades to come. At LWD Builders, we believe Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are one of the smartest ways to get all three right, which is why they've become our preferred method for building high-performance homes here in the Bay of Plenty.
WHAT exactly is a sip?
A Structural Insulated Panel is a building component made of a solid insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings — usually oriented strand board (OSB). Think of it like a high-tech building block: each panel is both the structure and the insulation, all in one.
Because the panels are manufactured in a factory to precise specifications, they arrive on site ready to be craned into place and assembled — walls, roofs, and floors going up as large, continuous sections rather than being stick-built piece by piece. The result is a building envelope that's exceptionally strong, remarkably airtight, and beautifully energy efficient.
A home that's cheaper to run, year after year
This is the big one. Traditional timber-framed walls are full of timber studs that interrupt the insulation and create "thermal bridges" — pathways where heat escapes in winter and sneaks in over summer. SIPs provide a continuous layer of insulation with very few of those weak points, so your home holds its temperature far more steadily. SIP buildings are widely recognised as significantly more energy efficient than conventional framing — meaning lower power bills and less reliance on heating and cooling to stay comfortable.
Genuinely comfortable living
An airtight, well-insulated home isn't just efficient — it's a nicer place to be. No cold draughts in the morning, no rooms that bake in the afternoon sun, and a much more even temperature from one end of the house to the other. For Tauranga's warm, humid summers and cooler winters, that consistency makes a real day-to-day difference.
Healthier air inside
Because a SIP home is so airtight, the air coming in and out is controlled rather than leaking through gaps. Paired with a properly designed ventilation system, that means filtered fresh air, better humidity control, and a home that's far less prone to mould and dampness — something every Kiwi homeowner knows is worth getting right.
why we choose to build with sips
the right material deserves the right team.
A SIP home is only as good as the hands that build it. The panels are high-performance, but they reward precision: every join sealed correctly, every detail thought through, the whole envelope working together as one system.
That's something our director Luke takes seriously. With over 15 years in the construction industry, Luke has built a deep understanding of what makes a home perform — and in 2024 he became a Passive House Certified Tradesperson, formal recognition of the skills needed to deliver genuinely high-performance, low-energy homes. It was a deliberate move: Luke wanted not only to master this way of building, but to be able to confidently guide his clients toward SIPs as, in our view, the best construction method available today.
When you build with LWD Builders, you're not handing your home to a team learning on the job. You're working with builders who understand the science behind the panels and the craft required to install them properly — so your home delivers everything SIPs promise.
Let’s build a home that performs for you.
