Founder & Lead Builder, Luke, is a Certified Passive House Tradesperson, which means he has the training and practical knowledge to build homes using internationally recognised high-performance building methods. This includes careful attention to insulation, airtightness, weather-tightness and the critical construction details that determine how well a home performs long term.

Being a Certified Passive House means we understand the science behind high-performance homes and how to correctly implement Passive House construction methods on site.

A Passive House (or Passivhaus) is an internationally recognised building standard designed to create homes that use very little energy while delivering outstanding comfort and indoor air quality.

Rather than relying on large heating or cooling systems, Passive Houses are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures naturally through smart design and construction.

Key principles include:

WHAT IS A PASSIVE HOUSE

  • Walls, roofs and floors are heavily insulated to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. This is why we typically recommend Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) which far out performs standard timber frame construction. You will be reaping the benefits (and lower running & maintenance costs!) for the lifetime of your home.

  • The building envelope is carefully sealed to prevent uncontrolled drafts and energy loss. This is why having detailed knowledge and expertise in this area is really critical to achieving a high performing home.

  • uPVC window joinery as well as thermally broken windows provide the ultimate seal for your home plus help maintain indoor temperatures while still allowing natural light and solar warmth.

  • Critical junctions are designed so heat cannot easily escape through the structure - when they are constructed accurately. Our knowledge and expertise in this area is what achieves the best possible results in the areas you can’t see but that matter most.

  • A balanced ventilation system continuously brings fresh filtered air into the home while recovering heat from outgoing air. We are fortunate to have some excellent MVHR system in New Zealand, and we can work with your architect to find the best option for your home and budget.

Passive House Thinking in Every Project

Not every home needs to be fully certified to benefit from Passive House thinking.

At LWD Builders, we regularly incorporate Passive House principles into projects where full certification may not be the goal. By focusing on airtightness, insulation, quality construction and smart detailing, we can dramatically improve how a home performs.
