high performance homes built to last.
At LWD Builders, we believe a great home should do more than just look good. It should be comfortable, healthy, energy efficient, and built to perform for decades.
Founder & Lead Builder, Luke, is a Certified Passive House Tradesperson, which means he has the training and practical knowledge to build homes using internationally recognised high-performance building methods. This includes careful attention to insulation, airtightness, weather-tightness and the critical construction details that determine how well a home performs long term.
By applying Passive House principles during construction, we help create homes that are warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and significantly more energy efficient than standard builds.
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PASSIVE HOUSE CERTIFIED
Being a Certified Passive House means we understand the science behind high-performance homes and how to correctly implement Passive House construction methods on site.
This includes:
Careful management of airtightness and weather-tightness
Correct installation of high-performance insulation
Attention to critical construction junctions
Preventing thermal bridging
Ensuring the home performs as designed
Passive House construction requires a higher level of precision during the build process. Our training ensures we understand how every layer of the building envelope works together to achieve exceptional results.
We also place strong emphasis on:
Hands-on involvement on site
Working with trusted sub-trades who understand quality
Open communication with clients throughout the build
Craftsmanship and attention to detail at every stage
The result is a home built not just for today, but for decades of comfort and efficiency.
A Passive House (or Passivhaus) is an internationally recognised building standard designed to create homes that use very little energy while delivering outstanding comfort and indoor air quality.
Rather than relying on large heating or cooling systems, Passive Houses are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures naturally through smart design and construction.
Key principles include:
WHAT IS A PASSIVE HOUSE
-
Walls, roofs and floors are heavily insulated to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. This is why we typically recommend Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) which far out performs standard timber frame construction. You will be reaping the benefits (and lower running & maintenance costs!) for the lifetime of your home.
-
The building envelope is carefully sealed to prevent uncontrolled drafts and energy loss. This is why having detailed knowledge and expertise in this area is really critical to achieving a high performing home.
-
uPVC window joinery as well as thermally broken windows provide the ultimate seal for your home plus help maintain indoor temperatures while still allowing natural light and solar warmth.
-
Critical junctions are designed so heat cannot easily escape through the structure - when they are constructed accurately. Our knowledge and expertise in this area is what achieves the best possible results in the areas you can’t see but that matter most.
-
A balanced ventilation system continuously brings fresh filtered air into the home while recovering heat from outgoing air. We are fortunate to have some excellent MVHR system in New Zealand, and we can work with your architect to find the best option for your home and budget.
High Performance InsulationA CLOSER LOOK AT SIPS -
Structurally insulated panels.
Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) are one of the construction systems we frequently recommend when building high-performance homes. We work with a number of trusted, high-quality SIPs suppliers throughout New Zealand, allowing us to select the right system to suit each architectural design and project requirements.
SIPs consist of a high-performance insulation core sandwiched between structural boards, creating a strong, airtight building panel. This system enables faster construction while delivering exceptional thermal performance. For homes targeting high energy efficiency, including Passive House levels of performance, SIPs provide a reliable way to reduce thermal bridging and improve overall airtightness.
Because our team places a strong focus on weather-tightness, critical junctions, and construction quality, SIPs are a natural fit with the way we build. They allow us to achieve excellent comfort, durability, and energy efficiency while maintaining the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines our work.
By partnering with experienced New Zealand suppliers and combining their systems with our on-site building expertise, we can deliver homes that are not only beautiful but also built to perform for decades to come.
Passive House Thinking in Every Project
Not every home needs to be fully certified to benefit from Passive House thinking.
At LWD Builders, we regularly incorporate Passive House principles into projects where full certification may not be the goal. By focusing on airtightness, insulation, quality construction and smart detailing, we can dramatically improve how a home performs.
Because at the end of the day, the best homes are not just the ones that look impressive.
They are the ones that feel incredible to live in.
